Bedford County Public Schools Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech and Language Departments would like to provide ideas and web resources you may access from home to support your child’s learning while we are out. Mobility and Positioning: If your child has mobility or positioning equipment in the home, please continue to utilize this equipment as recommended by your medical or school based provider. It is important to continue to provide your child with a variety of positions and mobility opportunities. For specific questions or concerns, please contact your physical therapy provider by email.

Gross Motor/Sensory Motor Skills: Most importantly, keep your child active! Opportunities to practice gross motor skills in a fun environment at home include movement songs and games. Examples: Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes; pretend to be different animals and move like them (jump, hop, crawl, pretend to climb, etc.); Follow the Leader; Simon Says. Incorporate ball skills such as basic throwing, catching, kicking, dribbling, and rolling a ball. Laundry baskets make great basketball hoops. Empty plastic bottles make great bowling pins. Oral Motor: Blow bubbles, chew sugarless gum, blow cotton balls across a table, or enjoy crunchy or chewy foods.

Language: Sort magazine pictures or household items into categories, read/look at books and answer “wh” questions by each page, describe pictures in a book, Go through the alphabet and think of an animal or a food that starts with each letter of the alphabet.
